In the first post of this trip, I shared a map showing the approximately 15 places we plan to visit during our three-and-a-half months in South America. My current plan is to include a similar illustration for each of our travel days.

Travel days aren’t much fun.

Sure, we do more than simply move from one place to another, but fundamentally, that’s what the day is about: getting there and settling in. This time, we were flying.

I think I’ve mentioned that the best I hope for when traveling by air is an uneventful flight. Unfortunately, this one didn’t even meet that modest standard.

We sat on the runway for about 30 minutes. The flight was very turbulent. We didn’t get the full snack service (granted, the snacks aren’t that great, but at least they break up the trip). And we arrived late.

Not exactly a stellar experience.

After settling into our apartment, we did a little exploring. By “a little,” I mean we walked into town, found a supermarket, and stocked up on supplies for the next two weeks.

Our apartment is pleasant enough and centrally located. What more could we ask for?

Well, now that you mention it, I suppose we could ask for a television that easily displays whatever we’re watching on the iPad. And I’m pleased to report that the apartment passes that test with flying colors.

We had a simple dinner in, watched several episodes of Hacks on HBO (thank you, Ernesto, for introducing me to the show), and called it a night.

Tomorrow, we start exploring Arequipa!
