It is unfortunate that I get anxious the day before I travel. I really don’t understand why. I haven’t had any problems traveling, and when I have, I am a pretty resourceful (and, I’ve been told, “charming as fuck”) which gets me through problems. But I am always a bit off before getting on a plane, either before, or after a vacation. As such, the last full day at a place has a little bit of internal tension for me.
Partially because of this we decided to take it easy for our last full day. We went to a couple of small towns (Lyttleton, and Sumner) for some sightseeing and shopping. Lyttleton had a farmers market going on and we thought we might be able to score some beautiful local things there. We succeeded.
Lyttleton is, as the name implies, a small town. It has a port and the entire town is built up around the port. What was interesting was how they kept building up the sides of the mountains so many people had an amazing view of the port. Surprisingly, the farmers market had two bakeries which sold gluten free goodies so we ate well. I found two signs in Lyttleton that amused me.
Sumner seemed more like a resort town. The beach there had the softest sand we encountered on our entire trip. We had lunch in a nice restaurant right on the beach named, appropriately enough, “The Beach”. Robin and I dipped our toes in the water as well.
I know this isn’t much of a blog entry which is why I warned you up front that my last day is one where I feel a little off. I’m probably going to write some kind of wrap up of the trip in a day or two. But right now, I’m back at the hotel having returned the rental car, had dinner in the hotel (I didn’t feel much like more traveling), played some crosscrib (Robin slaughtered me in two games), and getting ready for travel tomorrow. We have a light from Christchurch to Auckland, from Auckland to Los Angeles and finally from Los Angeles to Denver. We leave here around 3:00 pm on Sunday and arrive in Denver at… 6:30 pm on Sunday. I wish the trip only took three and one half hours but there is that pesky international date line. So we are looking at closer to twenty hours of travel. it will be good to be back home and it is very hard to leave. I can only speak for myself but taking three weeks to really get to know a place feels like a great way to travel. I think we will have more of these kind of trips in the future.
